State of Connecticut 2020 Tax Deferment Program
Most Tax Payment Due Dates Extended Until October 1st, 2020,
Escrowed Payments Due by August 3rd, 2020,
Landlords Must Apply to be Eligible for Extended Due Date
Hamden, CT – The Office of the Mayor and Hamden Legislative Council are pleased to announce the implementation of the State of Connecticut 2020 Tax Deferment Program in Hamden. The Tax Deferment will extend the grace period for payment of the July 2020 property tax installment until October 1, 2020. As a result most Hamden taxpayers will have until October 1, 2020 to pay without interest. There are however a few important caveats to be aware of. Taxpayers whose taxes are escrowed and paid by a mortgage institution or bank are not eligible for the extended grace period, and those taxes are payable by August 3, 2020. This is per the State of Connecticut.
Landlords will be expected to pass along to their tenants similar forbearance. Landlords can satisfy the commensurate forbearance and income decline requirements for relief under Executive Order 7S for residential properties simply by complying with EO 7X, and confirming they will do so in an email to the tax collector at covidtaxext@hamden.com. Landlords must also send along the completed and signed application. Landlords of commercial properties may satisfy these requirements with the documentation listed in the application form provided by OPM, and should include that with their completed and signed application. The State of Connecticut asks you to fill out this application, and return it to the tax collector by July 1, 2020.
If you are not a landlord, as long as you do not have an escrow account, you automatically qualify for the extended grace period with no further action on your part. Applications may be obtained and submitted via instructions provided at www.hamden.com/taxdeferment2020.
