(November 27, 2021) - One of the worst fires in the history of the New Haven Fire Department occured on this date one hundred years ago when fire raced through the Rialto Theatre on College Street, resulting in the deaths of nine theater patrons and injuries to more than 75 others. It is believed that the fire was started by incense burning for atmorphere during a showing of the newly-released motion picture "The Sheik," starring Rudoplh Valentino.
