Vacancies filled for half the department's lieutenants
On Wednesday evening, May 13, 1981, the Board of Fire Commissioners promoted Firefighters Ray Reilly, Bob Chadwick, Dave Johnson and Bill Coppola to fill four lieutenant vacancies created by the retirement of Lt. Dave Hermann, the passing of Lt. Bill Hines, and the promotions of Lt. John Tramontano and Lt. Gilbert Spencer.
Tramontano was promoted to Deputy Chief Training Officer following the retirement of Dep. Chief Ken Harrington, and Spencer was promoted to Captain following the retirement of Capt. Burt Hillocks.
Until 1984, each platoon had only three company officers: one captain and two lieutenants. An officer was assigned to Stations 2, 3, and 4. The company officer assigned to Station 4 was also responsible for personnel at Stations 5 and 9, and frequently responded on the rescue to still alarms for those engine companies.
