HAMDEN PREPARES FOR HURRICANE ISAIAS
Recommendations for Hamden Residents
Hamden - Mayor Curt Balzano Leng wishes to assure Hamden residents that the Town is in full-scale preparation mode for the upcoming storm. All Emergency Personnel from Fire, Police and Public Works are continuing to prepare machinery and equipment and will be standing by with additional crews on call. The Emergency Management Team has met over the past few hours and would like to alert residents of the following steps that residents should take to protect themselves, their families and their property from the anticipated storm:
-
CHARGE ALL ELECTRONIC DEVICES required for communication or entertainment.
-
CHECK SUPPLIES AND WATER. Inventory important essential items such as food, water, medicines, batteries, etc.
-
MOVE OUTDOOR ITEMS INSIDE. Place furniture, flower pots, equipment, etc. to reduce risk of damage or injury.
-
BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR. If you have an elderly, disabled or infirm neighbor, please take a moment to check in on them and ensure that they are safe.
Flooding
Please be aware that there are many low-lying areas throughout Hamden which may be subject to flooding. Residents are urged to clear off any near-by catch basin grates and/or drainage culverts of any loose debris or litter. Should roadways be underwater, DO NOT DRIVE INTO OR THROUGH THE WATER. Water depths on submerged roadways are easily misjudged and could result in vehicular damage and/or bodily harm.
Public Works crews have been out clearing potential trouble spots in preparation for the storm, but possible heavy flooding is expected in low-lying areas.
Trees
Hamden residents are urged to be aware of the potential for downed trees due to expected high winds. Priority will be given to clearing of main roadways for emergency vehicle travel. Calls will be prioritized utilizing a triage approach, elevating the most critical situations to first priority. Should a tree come down on your property which poses a serious threat to your home or is blocking a roadway, please call 911 and the call will be dispatched accordingly.
