Twenty-nine year Hamden Fire Department veteran Robert Surprise was sworn in as second-in-command on Wednesday, March 10th. A large contingent of both on and off duty Department members, as well as retired members, turned out for the swearing-in at the Hamden Government Center.
In opening remarks, Mayor Jackson spoke of the abundant respect department members have for Deputy Chief Surprise. After his wife, Debbie, pinned on his badge, Deputy Chief Surprise spoke of the great respect he has for the members of the Department, and that he looks forward to serving them and the department in his new capacity.
Deputy Chief Surprise began his career with the Hamden Fire Department in January 1981 as a Firefighter-Paramedeic and had served in the ranks of Lieutenant, Captain and Battalion Chief prior to his appointment by Hamden Mayor Scott Jackson. Deputy Chief Surprise fills the vacancy created by the January retirement of thirty-year department veteran Clark Hurlburt.
