Town Clerk Karimah Mickens administers the oath to Lieuts. Paczowski and Schaffer. |

Chief Gary Merwede opened the ceremony, noting the significance of today's date, "Before we begin, I would like to take a moment to remember and acknowledge more than 160,000 allied troops who landed along a 50 mile stretch of heavily fortified French coastline on this day in 1944. On that day Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower declared the United States would accept nothing less than victory against Nazi Germany.
"More than 9,000 allied soldiers were killed or wounded, but their sacrifice ultimately allowed for the beginning of the end of World War II. With Memorial Day so fresh in our minds, I would ask all assembled for a moment of silence in acknowledgement of D-Day and its significance in world history."
