"Why I've drafted instructions to give the ventilator to someone else."
Check out former Hamdenite Paul Keane's thought provoking guest column published earlier this week in Cleveland's The Plain Dealer (CLICK). Regarding the miracles of modern medical technologies, he revealed his own miraculous survival as a 1944 newborn because of incubators, and recalled from his close friend, Isabel Wilder, that her brother Thornton had a twin brother who did not survive infancy in the days before incubators. Many years later a ventilator kept his mother alive for nearly four months following heart surgery, but to what end?

Furman Road Garage Fire Knocked Down
|
Sunday, March 22, 2020 - At 4:29 this afternoon the Hamden Fire Department was dispatched to a fire at 74 Furman Road. Companies arrived on scene at 4:32 and encountered a fully involved detached two car garage. A vehicle in front of the garage was also engulfed in flames.
Additionally, the fire had begun spreading to the woodlands behind the home. Companies quickly knocked down the fires and did extensive overhaul. The intense flames also resulted in siding damage to a neighboring home from the radiant heat.
In the course of the investigation it was discovered that the fire originated in a trash receptacle in front of the garage. A smoldering piece of plastic that was believed to be extinguished was placed in the receptacle and ignited other combustibles. A neighbor noticed the flames shortly thereafter and called 911 and alerted the occupants.
Responding Companies: E2, E3, R2, S1, T1, C1, C2, C3, C5

Friday, March 19, 2010 - It never fails. Hardly a year goes by that a student from that "institution of higher learning," situated across the street from Sleeping Giant State Park, doesn't become a Sir Edmund Hillary wannabe.
This fellow was lucky. All he ended up with was a few cuts and a summons for disorderly conduct. Some are not so lucky.

Helen Street Kitchen Fire Extinguished Quickly
Resident Transported
|
Thursday, March 19, 2020 - At 6:02 this evening the Hamden Fire Department was dispatched to 163 Helen Street on a reported structure fire. Rescue 2 arrived on scene at 6:03 and reported smoke coming from the rear of the home.
.
Rescue 2 personnel encountered a heavy smoke condition emanating from the kitchen. The crew was able to knock down the bulk of the fire utilizing a water can. Engine 2 extinguished the remaining fire and hot spots in the surrounding area. The fire was declared under control by Battalion Chief John Spencer after approximately 15 minutes.
.
Fire Marshal Brian Dolan has determined that the fire was caused by a pan of oil igniting on a stove top burner. The fire then quickly spread to the adjacent cabinets. There was extensive damage to the kitchen area and smoke damage throughout the home.

New Haven Parks Department
Park Road (Hamden)
Monday, March 14, 1977
A nasty fire in a New Haven Parks Department's storage building on Park Road kept Hamden firefighters of Platoon 2 very busy on a windy night forty-three years ago this week. The building was already well involved before the arrival of the first engine, Engine 3. Firefighters' efforts were hampered by winds that threatened to spread the fire to adjacent buildings. Fire Marshal Bob O'Donnell determined that it had been set. The website thanks Bill Rahl, son of Hamden Firefighter Joe Rahl, for the color photo below that he shot at the height of the blaze.

| NEVER FORGET!
We will always remember our brother firefighters who made the supreme sacrifice, and the thousands of other innocent victims who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.
Always keep them, their families and the FDNY in your thoughts and prayers.
