Reilly's, Dec. 25, 1964 |
|
Friday, December 25, 1964 was not going to be a white Christmas. There was no doubt about that. The weather was more like a mid-April Easter. By mid-morning, temperatures in southern Connecticut were in the 60s. And despite the very un-Christmas-like weather, everyone was hoping that the Christmas of 1964 would foster much fonder yuletide memories than those of the previous Christmas, which had arrived only five weeks after a shocking national tragedy.

Firefighter Joseph Rahl (1924 - 2019)
We have been notified and are deeply saddened to report the passing yesterday, December 23, 2019, of retired Firefighter Joseph Rahl, 95, who served on the department for 33 years. He was the department's oldest retiree.
Joe began his fire service career on March 12, 1942 as a volunteer firefighter with the Mt. Carmel Fire Volunteer Fire Co. He served as the company's captain from 1947-48, and again from 1954 to 1956, when he was appointed to the career department. He retired in November 1989.
Calling hours are Friday, December 27th, from 5-7 p.m. at Beecher and Bennett Funeral Parlor, 2300 Whitney Avenue, Hamden. As always, department retirees with dress blues are welcome to participate in standing Honor Guard. Services will be held Saturday morning at 11 at Beecher and Bennett, with interment to follow at Centerville Cemetery.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Rahl family at this sad time.

Humphrey volunteers turn Station 2 over to the Town.
During this week in 1949, the membership of the Humphrey Hook & Ladder Fire Association officially turned their 1913 fire station over to the Town of Hamden. The company had gone inactive shortly after the end of World War II and with the expansion of the career department that occurred shortly thereafter.

Governor Ned Lamont has announced that he is directing U.S. and State of Connecticut flags to be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Saturday, December 7, 2019, in recognition of National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.
The national observation honors the lives lost in the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Accordingly, since no flag should fly higher than the U.S. flag, all other flags – including state, municipal, corporate, or otherwise – should also be lowered during this same duration of time.

The Tradition Continues
(November 27) - Richie Maybury and John Longo began organizing the first Thanksgiving "Turkey Drop-offs" in the 1990s. For the next two decades it was run by newly-retired Lt. Jeff Pechmann. Last year, Jeff announced that he was handing the job over to Firefighter Tom Paranzino, who did an outstanding job organizing active and retired firefighters for this year's deliveries of turkeys and Stop & Shop gift cards, which took place yesterday.

We will always remember our brother firefighters who made the supreme sacrifice, and the thousands of other innocent victims who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.
Always keep them, their families and the FDNY in your thoughts and prayers.
