Car vs. Schoolbus at Benham and Lakeview
|
(Oct. 23) - At 0715 this morning, Hamden fire units responded with the Hamden police and AMR to a schoolbus vs. car accident at the corner of Lakeview and Behnam St. Collectively, nine patients were assessed and treated by on scene personnel. Both drivers as well as two bus passengers were transported to the hospital. Three people from the car refused medical treatment and two other students on the bus were released to their parents on scene.
Hamden and New Haven public schools were notified and had representatives on scene as the bus was carrying Hamden students to a magnet school in New Haven. The Hamden police are investigating the accident at this time and the road has reopened to all traffic.

The unidentified fellow in this photo is eyeballing Hamden's newest piece of fire apparatus, the 1938 "Emergency Squad" on a Diamond-T chassis, manufactured by the Wood Engineering Co. of Topsfield, Massachusetts. The truck was eventually equipped with all the latest in rescue gear, including oxygen, an E&J Resuscitator, fire fighting foam, gas masks, Scott airpacks, an asbestos suit (no kidding!), a stretcher, cutting torch, H&H Inhalator, various lights, a generator, and more.
The truck was delivered in February 1938 when, as can be seen in this photo, the bay doors at Station 4 were on the north side of the building. Beginning in late 1939, Station 4 was renovated so the doors faced Whitney Avenue. The job was completed in early 1940.
During the 1938-39 fiscal year, the Squad responded on 175 calls, three of which were for medical assistance.
The "Squad," as it was called, responded with the Station 4 officer on almost all alarms, including all box alarms. It remained in service at Station 4 until 1959, when it was assigned to West Woods Volunteer Co. No. 9. When it became a spare in 1965, it was quartered at Mount Carmel. When the Co. 5 volunteers got their own brush truck in 1969, the old Squad was moved to the new fire station at West Woods, where it remained until it was sold to a private party in late 1971. Its whereabouts today in not known.

House Fire - 240 Russo Drive
Dramatic rescue of a 95-year old occupant
|
October 7, 2019 - The Hamden Fire Department was dispatched at 03:01 p.m. for a third party call reporting a fire at 240 Russo Drive. While apparatus was en route, Central Communications advised all responding companies that they had received an additional 911 call from a neighbor reporting flames from a window, and that an elderly resident may still be inside the house.
On his way home from an extra-duty assignment, Hamden police Sergeant Jason Venditto was near the scene when he heard the dispatch, and was able to get to the residence before the fire department arrived. Sgt. Venditto entered the smoke filled house and successfully located and removed a 95-year old female occupant, who was still inside. Fire Chief Gary Merwede said that he had no doubt that Officer Venditto saved her life.
|
Arriving within three minutes after being dispatched, Engine 9 reported heavy smoke emitting from a two story single-family residence. Engine 9's company officer then reported that all occupants were confirmed out of the building. The crew of Engine 9 immediately initiated an aggressive interior attack, quickly extinguishing the fire in a second floor bedroom.
Battalion Chief John Spencer declared the fire under control at 3:18 p.m. Extensive overhaul was performed to ensure that no fire spread to any other areas of the structure.
One civilian with non-life threatening injuries was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. There were no firefighter injuries.
The Hamden Fire Department would like to remind residents of the importance of have working smoke detectors, and recommends that they be checked at least once a month. Fortunately, there were working smoke detectors present in this home, which alerted the resident.
The members of the Hamden Fire Retirees Association congratulate Sgt. Jason Venditto for his courageous life-saving effort, and the members of the Hamden Fire Department on a good stop.
