9/11/2001 Remembered
In conjunction with our annual 9/11 tribute to the FDNY earlier this week, retired Dep. Chief Clark Hurlburt emailed the website with his recollection of that terrible day and the poignant experience that followed a year later, which we would like to share with our website visitors.
|
"On September 11, 2001, with the bus leaded up and ready to go, we followed IAFF and FDNY directives and stayed put awaiting further orders. As there were no rescues to accomplish and the pile was FDNY territory we stood down.
"A year and a month later, at the annual FDNY Memorial Day Ceremony, representatives from Hamden Fire were incredibly honored to take part in the ceremony as flag bearers in the Parade of Colors at the beginning of the event, where the middle section of Madison Square Garden was ringed with American flags, each brought in and held by a firefighter during the playing of the National Anthem.
"I have the program book from that day and am attaching a scan of the cover. An amazing and moving experience."
Clark Hurlburt
Deputy Chief, HFD (Ret.)
|
In a subsequent email, Dep. Chief Hurlburt, then a company officer, stated he believed that, in addition to himself, Batt. Chiefs Bill Coppola, and Paul Wetmore Jr., they were accompanied by then-Capt. Don LaBanca and Firefighter Rob Madigosky. He wished he had a complete list. Does anyone know? hfdbadge102@aol.com

Firefighter Bobby Slater at 6's - Wednesday, April 2, 1969
(Yep, we enlarged the slide and read the date on the newspaper)
|
It was Platoon 1's last of four nights. Firefighter Bobby Slater and his co-hort, Firefighter Eddy Doiron (who took this photo), would go home in the morning, returning two days later on Saturday to begin their four-day day trick.
__________
Eighteen days after the above photo was taken, Bob, Eddy and the rest of Platoon 1 (and 3) would be kept quite busy. That Sunday, April 20, 1969, two neighborhood boys, one seven and the other five, threw lit matches into a Webb Street warehouse directly behind Station 6, setting fire to H&D Paper Products, resulting in one of Hamden's biggest blazes ever.

Fooling Around with Foam at PW - August 1971
|

Photo by Ed Doiron Sr. - CLICK TO ENLARGE |
|
|
The 42-hour workweek having begun ten months earlier, Eddy Doiron, now on Platoon 2, took this slide as several fellow members of Platoon 2 and two volunteers met next to Public Works to experiment with that nasty smelling protein foam.
The career personnel (L-R) are Firefighters Sal "Cookie" Ferraro, Howie Hurlburt Sr., and Walt Macdowall at the nozzle. Hidden behind Cookie is Ff. Tony "Moonman" Mellilo. The fellow in the blue hat is Mt. Carmel volunteer John Blasius. The tall, (one-time) skinny guy, another Mt. Carmel volunteer, joined the career department four years later and is presently your webmeister.
The khaki work uniforms worn by Hamden's firefighters were traded in the following year for the dark blue work uniforms still in use today.

The 47th Edition of ENGINE 260's
Fire Apparatus Show and Muster
was held last Saturday, September 8th, at Eisenhower Park in Milford.
______________
This year's featured apparatus was Bantam [CT] Fire Company's 1922 American-LaFrance "chemical wagon" on a Brockway chassis.
|
Bantam Fire Department's beautifully restored 1922 American-LaFrance
chemical wagon, on a Brockway chassis, was this year's featured apparatus.
|
We were informed by the owner that this Sound Beach F.D. pumper, on a 1939 Diamond-T pickup truck chassis, was featured in a parade at the 1939 New York World's Fair.

| NEVER FORGET!
We will always remember our brother firefighters who made the supreme sacrifice, and the thousands of other innocent victims who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.
Always keep them, their families and the FDNY in your thoughts and prayers.
